Where To Go On A First Date (part 1)

by Martin Shawne

Congratulations. You got her to say yes for a date. Now what…

There are many activities you can do and, depending on the circumstances that you got her to say yes, the choices may be obvious. One of my first dates was to a Sushi restaurant after she asked me if I liked sushi.

Other times the choice may not be so cut and dry and you have to rely on the traditional first date places. I have made a list of some of the first date places I took Japanese women on and give my feedback on the enjoyment, impact, and overall outcome of the date (i.e. did it lead to a second).

Japanese women are different from Western women when it comes to dating in general and first dates in particular. Although this article addresses some of the differences, the main focus is on general date locations.

This is part 1 of a 2-part article.

Movie Theater: One of the most typical first date places a Japanese girl might suggest going – DON’T DO IT! I've taken a few first dates to the movies with less than satisfactory results.

Besides not being able to talk to your date, there are tastes to consider. You like Action Movies with T&A and she likes Coming Of Age-Kitty Cat-Animated-Movies with lots of romance. Either you or your date will have a miserable time.

Let's say you agree on a movie – For me, I have never found a sold out movie, no matter how popular the movie was or the size of the theater. Let's not forget the microwaved popcorn, and the watered down soft drinks and you got yourself a first date that you will always remember – just not in the good way.

First Date Rating: If you never want to see her again, take her to a movie.

Dinner – Nice Restaurant: Getting dressed up and going to a nice restaurant sounds like a winner but think of the pressure. You have to dress up. She will have to dress up. There are cheaper ways to impress. There are few exceptions but, as a first date, I would avoid the nicer restaurants.

First Date Rating: Unless you and your date are extremely comfortable dining at the higher-class restaurants, I would wait until later in the relationship.

Dinner – Average to Above Average Restaurant: Semi-casual, get dressed up if you want to but there isn't a snobby maître telling you that you need to buy a new wardrobe just to eat there, is the best choice if dining is your choice of first dates. There are advantages of a dinner versus a lunch date. Dinners are usually longer dates and, if things go well, transitioning to your place is much easier. The other side of the coin is that if things don’t go well, the date will feel like it is lasting forever.

First Date Rating: If you feel you are hitting it off prior to asking her out – dinner at an average to above average restaurant is a good choice.

Part 2 continues with other traditional first date locations.
