When I attended college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, I took a Japanese language class. It was for my language credit and I chose Japanese because it just looked so different and challenging. Little did I know where it would lead me!

One place it led me was to dating a Japanese exchange student. What I learned about the language and culture of Japan through her was really enlightening, and it would come in handy later. But it wasn’t meant to be and we parted ways.

And then it led me to Japan. I got a job using my professional skills working at an English-language magazine in Tokyo and doing translation projects on the side. I found that I could make great money here doing what I loved and I was happy to be enjoying a steady career.

I was in the land of milk and honey when it comes to women. Like most westerners, I jumped at the first opportunities I had. Gradually I figured out that there’s a huge difference between what some guys call “English bandits” and the girls with low self-esteem who have a western-man fetish, and the real women out there with class (and are more of a challenge).

Everybody has heard stories of guys who come to Japan, and fall for the beautiful and elegant Japanese women. Well, I saw the Western guys I knew, expat lawyers, bankers, and IT engineers fall in and out of relationships with Japanese women as fast as you can say “sukiyaki.” Because I knew the language and culture, they were always coming to me for advice.

I’m glad that xanDer asked me to write for his site. I’m always happy to help out guys who need it, and I hope the knowledge and experience I can share will help.
