After years of dating, I have come to discover that the old rules of attraction no longer apply. With new generations come new rules and expectations for the dating scene.

It’s always hard to end a relationship, even if you are the one who wants out of it. When you are a Western guy in Japan dating a Japanese woman, the complications often increase – there are cultural differences, language issues and other ways that make breaking up hard to do. However, while there are ways to break up with a Japanese woman that may make it easier for both of you, there are definitely wrong ways to end a relationship.

According to some friends of mine who are women, one of the most confusing things to them is why men feel they have to be some kind of superman. There are so many men out there who feel the need to be 100% in control at all times – they cannot show vulnerability, they cannot admit a mistake. Even worse, some men feel like they have to act cocky, strut around in bars and locker rooms like they’re macho studs, brag about their sexual conquests…you know the type.

I see so many Western guys in Japan who are completely screwing up their relationships with Japanese women. You start out dating the Japanese girl of your dreams, you think everything is going fine, and then without warning she walks away from you, and most of the time you have no idea why.
